The hotel where Alfred Hitchcock’s infamous “To Catch a Thief” was filmed, which has been robbed before this week, has now again been robbed during a diamond show. Staged on the ground floor with a few unarmed guards, a single thief had little trouble escaping with $136,000,000 in jewels. The Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes is hosting a jewelry exhibit over the summer, but they sadly forgot to let the local police know that they had $100m+ in jewels on the ground floor. Most countries in Europe don’t allow private guards or citizens to carry weapons… which made this hotel a perfect target two times in a row to get robbed.

Exclusive Exhibit

The hotel is on the oh so exclusive Promenade de la Croisette right on the French Riviera, a playground for the rich and famous.

Strangely enough, no one let the police in on the fact that millions of dollars in jewels were at the hotel. Usually in cases like these the police provide armed security, at the very least the insurance company typically will.

The collection is on loan from the prestigious Leviev diamond house, owned by billionaire Lev Leviev.

Not Hard to Sell

When it comes to big, high quality gems, it’s not hard for thieves to offload them. Large, high quality minerals can always be broken down with the right tools, documentation can be faked, it’s not all that hard to move forward selling them, smuggling them far away. The estimates of just how much have been stolen have ranged from $50m to $150m, depending on the day and who has been asked.

But this isn’t the only heist that has been pulled off in Europe lately; in February $50m in diamonds was stolen in Belgium; in Antwerp an unknown quantity of high value stones were loaded onto a plane on its way to Zurich. A team of DOZENS were involved and authorities there have been slowly rounding people up and charging them with the crime – recovering much of the stolen materials.

Cannes was struck twice back in May during the infamous film festival. During the first a safe was ripped out of a wall in a hotel room – the loot including a Grisogono necklace worth $2.6m and another $1m in jewels. It’s rumored that a group of thieves known as the “Pink Panthers” are behind these heists and the most recent jewelry exhibit heist.
