Active and outdoorsy Oakvillians will love this post on Cycle, Walk Oakville! With weeks of fair weather ahead, it is only fitting that our Town has made summer even more enjoyable. Read on to know more about what makes cycling and walking around Oakville a lot of fun!

Plenty to Explore!

Recreational opportunities abound for everyone here in Oakville. Our Town has more than 200 parks with sports fields and playgrounds, 31 waterfront parks, 1,420 hectares of beautiful parkland, more than 300 kilometres of trails, and more than 185 kilometres of off-road and on-road cycling paths. Good thing you have the whole summer to explore all of that exciting walking and cycling paths, eh?

Get Your Map!

With the Trails and Cycleways map, which you can access either online, through the Oakville Mobile App, or get a physical copy from our Town’s libraries or community centres or the Town Hall, you can plan your walking or cycling route throughout our Town’s beautiful cycle routes, roadways, and trails.

Here is a link to the online copy of the Cycleways and Trails map and here is a link where you can download the Oakville Mobile App.

Observe the Trail Types

On-road trail types are categorized into cycle lanes, sharrows, paved boulders, and signed cycle routes. For lanes that are purely for cyclists only, choose the cycle lanes. They are often marked with a white line, has a physical barrier, and have bicycle symbols. Sharrows, signed cycle routes, and paved shoulders may be shared with pedestrians and other types of vehicles or for emergency use.

Off-road trails can either be multi-use trails which are within a boulevard or major trails which are what trails within valleys and parks are called. Both are two-way paths where no motorized vehicles are allowed.

More details on the various trail types are at the Cycle, Walk Oakville page.

Notice on Temporary Trail Closures

Due to public safety concerns as well as our Town’s efforts on removing EAB-affected trees (trees damaged by Emerald Ash Borer), some trails are temporarily closed while the Oakville tree-removal work is ongoing. The Woodlands Hazard Abatement page will give you more information about this, should you be interested to know more.
