Many of the homes in Oakville were built during the boom period of the 70s and 80s, but we also have some World War 2 homes too. While it’s constantly drilled into our heads that newer is better, sometimes it’s great to fall in love with the character and charm of an older home. Here we’re going to go over what older homes offer buyers, what they don’t and if they’re the right choice for you in Oakville real estate.

What Older Homes Offer

Older homes have a lot to offer, here’s a quick list!

  • Closer to Everything

As new homes are constructed they tend to be further and further away from city centres. If you want to be close to amenities, you’re going to most likely get an older Oakville home. You’ll be in the middle of everything, you’ll be able to find a great neighbourhood and best of all you’ll be close to public transport if you need to commute to work. Why waste fuel when you can be a short walk from shops and entertainment?

  • Plenty of Space

More modern construction just isn’t that big fan of space; there’s nothing wrong with a small condo with a great view, but when you want a house you’re going to want space and land and be able to move around. Older homes give you room to breathe, plenty of land to garden on and for your children and pets to enjoy. This can be a double edged sword, as you may wind up spending more money to maintain the property than a newer one. You’ll need to weigh your options when looking at Oakville homes for sale and see if it’s the right choice for you.

  • A Decorator’s Dream

Who doesn’t want to live in an Art Deco house? Fine crown mouldings that are intact from the 1920s or 1940s make a room pop, and all of those fine touches from that time can really give you a beautiful home. Older homes may have smaller rooms, but a remodel can be well worth it. Always keep in mind that one day you may want to sell your Oakville real estate, so you don’t want to make so many different changes to the original design that no one will want to buy it.

Before you buy any older Oakville home, consider what it offers! Is it close to the things that matter to you, does it help you get away from it all? Will you be able to walk your kids to school, will you be able to get around without wasting a lot of energy? What is the home you’re currently in lack, and what would you like your next home to be?

When shopping for Oakville real estate you’ll have a lot of options; we can help you find the right home at the right price. If you’re not sure what you want, we can help you there too.
