It is no secret that Oakville is the home of several well-known personalities especially in the field of sports, but do you know that the town is also the home of two respected broadcasters? Read on and get to know two famous Oakvillian broadcasters who are creating waves at CBC today.
Popularly known as the host of the CBC News Toronto, Anne-Marie is one of the country’s top female broadcast journalists, having earned the GTA’s Woman of the Year Award in 2011 for her journalistic excellence and active community involvement.
As a journalist, Anne-Marie’s range of past roles includes news coverage for CBC at the local, national, and international level. She’s the broadcaster who covered insightful interviews with humanitarian Stephen Lewis, former governor general Michaëlle Jean, Bollywood superstar Binasha Basu, and feminist pioneer Gloria Steinem. She also covered the Canadian Tour and the London royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, as well as the state funeral of Jack Layton.
Anne-Marie co-anchored the Toronto flagship newscast of Global Television prior to joining CBC. She also reported for Canada AM, Newsnet, and CTV’s National News with Lloyd Robertson plus also did a stint as a journalist for 21C, CTV's Gemini Award-winning investigative current affairs show.
Anne-Marie is truly a woman of substance whom young women can really look up to. Nominated as one of Canada’s top 35 under 35 for her steadfast efforts to provide mentorship to young women through her community outreach, Anne-Marie is not only successful in the career front but is also the proud mother of triplets. In fact, her whole pregnancy was chronicled with her husband Darryl Konynenbelt in 2007 in the hilarious and popular National Post column which is called the Triplet Journal.
Mediwake shares that her journalistic skills may be rooted in her passion for storytelling and natural curiousity which she got from her mixed Scottish and Sri-Lankan ancestry. Back in 2004, she hosted Sri Lanka A Journey Home, a network-produced news documentary which allowed Canadians to see the degree of devastation Mediwake’s Birth country has experienced including a very rare and exclusive interview with S.P. Tamilselvan, the Tamil Tiger second-in-command.
Known as the Sports Reporter for CBC News today, Peter Armstrong used to be a foreign correspondent for CBC Newsworld and CBC Television and also had a previous role of being the host of World Report.
Many may not be aware but Peter Armstrong is an award-winning journalist who has reported in both English and French from four continents. Having covered three wars and reported from the frontlines of Afghanistan nestled amongst the British, U.S. and British Troops, he bravely recorded and reported all that he saw from war-ravaged Afghanistan. Not only that, but Armstrong also travelled throughout Israel, the Gaza Strip, and The West Bank to cover the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On a lighter form of journalism, he’s the reporter who covered the live report from Barack Obama’s Kenyan Ancestral Village on the eve of the 2008 American Presidential Election.
As a reporter, Armstrong has worked for CBC all over Canada from Quebec City with stints in Saint John, Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa's Parliamentary Bureau. Amongst his news coverage are news stories from the United States and of course Canada and includes three federal elections, the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, and the SARS outbreak.
A native Oakvillian, Armstrong is currently studying Arabic although he is already completely bilingual in English and French. A graduate of Nova Scotia’s Arcadia University, Armstrong completed his journalism studies in Quebec City’s l'Universite Laval. He is married to Piya Chattopadhyay, also a Canadian journalist.
