If you’re thinking about taking a trip down south, you’ll need to know about the “currency surcharge” tax that many tour and trip operators are changing Canadian travellers. An additional $35 fee on travel trips (sometimes more, depending on how much you spend) to make up for the difference between the Loonie and the Dollar might not seem like a lot, but if you’re travelling to multiple destinations those dollar signs begin to add up.

Loonie Falling, Prices Mounting

It’s not just this “Loonie Tax” that you have to worry about, it’s a cost that carries over to just about everything you do south of the border. If you’re planning a shopping holiday in the US or Carribean your buying power may just not be what it was a couple years ago.

Many of the major Canadian tour operators are having to add the surcharge on to break even, and if you book out of the country with an American operator you’re likely to pay even more - it just depends. With no end in sight it could be something we’re all stuck with for some time.

On Tuesday the Canadian Dollar was at .90 of the USD, which doesn’t sound like much of a difference, but that 10% can make a big difference, especially for tour operators. Some have decided that it’s best to add an extra fee on top, just in case.

Not All Vacation Carriers Raising Prices

Some vacation carriers aren’t levying surcharges on vacation-goers, so it’s important to keep an eye out for them - especially if you’re planning on travelling through the remainder of the first half of this year. And while it’s always best to plan ahead, it’s not always.

But in the end, it might be smarter to just take a vacation right here in Canada. Niagara is nice just about any time of year, and with dozens of fantastic resorts within 90 minutes of the GTA you’ll be able to find weekend fun all year long.

With many Canadians heading south of the border to buy vacation homes and enjoy that oh so vaunted “Snowbird” lifestyle, but with our dollars not stretching as far as they once did, it might be a better idea to buy your second home here - or wait until things bounce back before you try and buy a home in the sunbelt.

While we can’t up the value of the Loonie (wouldn’t that be helpful?!), we can help you get the best, beautiful luxury home possible.
