Summer is (almost) finally here in Oakville! What better way to celebrate summer than by sharing and promoting the community spirit we have in our Town, right? This summer, Downtown Oakville comes alive with the cultural activities and events which were planned as part of the Oakville Summer Cultural Connection.

Summer Cultural Connection at the Downtown

The Town of Oakville and Union Gas teamed up to launch this new summer attraction and event for Oakvillians. What you’ll see in the Summer Cultural Connection is a series of events and activities which are all geared towards supporting the development and advancement of cultural programmes and exploring opportunities for creating partnerships with local organizations – these contribute to forming a downtown economic, social, and cultural hub for the community of Oakville.

A Farmer’s Market!

The Downtown area’s Navy Street and Centennial Square between Lakeshore Road and Church Street will the home of the Farmer’s Market and will be complemented all Saturdays of summer by a wide variety of workshops and free interactive displays hosted by partner organizations and town departments.

Every Saturday, at 8am to 2pm from June 6 to October 31, the summer Farmer’s Market will be at the Downtown. Visit the Farmer’s Market every Saturday all season-long for your weekly produce shopping needs. Marvel at the homemade goodies and the fresh-from-farm vegetables and fruits which would be available. Take note, visiting often is a must because vendors will be changed every week!

More Goodies

The preliminary schedule has been released and it’s looking good! How so? There would be free cultural activities at 9am to 2pm every Saturday all summer-long! Below are just some of them:

June 6 – Kids Hands-On Art Workshop and Basketball Skills and Drills Session

Either have your kids join some Oakville galleries staff for some arts lesson and interactive workshop or have them be taught basketball game skills by the River Oaks Community Centre’s recreational staff. Whatever you choose, your kiddos will surely love it!

June 13 – Pedal Power Bike Recharge Station and Nutrition Challenge

Do you know that charging your phone can be fun? Yes! Have your phone charged by your own pedal power at the market’s pedal power bike recharge station. This is one genius idea by the Town of Oakville’s Environmental Policy Department. Not your thing? Join the Nutrition Challenge together with the River Oaks Community Centre staff instead.

June 20 – Kids’ Hands-On Art Workshop

The Oakville Galleries staff will be back to give kids a hands-on workshop where imaginations can run wild and creativity is the ‘game’ of the day.

June 27 – Fitness Demos and Mini Yoga Workout

The Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre staff will help you get a fantastic stretch and more as they lead fitness demos and mini drop-in yoga workouts, all for free of course.

Are these all? Definitely not! You’ll just have to check back or better yet, head to Downtown Oakville every weekend. Lots of special events are in store including the Summer Solstice Yogathon on June 21. That’s pure yoga from 8am to 5pm! You can also literally paint the town with real painters all Sundays of June. There’s also a Gadfly performance on June 27 and drop-in recreational activities at Lakeside Park all Saturdays from June to September. Workshops are likewise available and there will be more events and activities for sure. You can even register your organization to become a part of the Summer Cultural Connection! Everyone is truly welcome!
