The beautiful restored summer home which belonged to award winning Hollywood actress Katherine Hepburn is up for grabs.
The beachfront property, which has been with the Hepburn family for almost 100 years and which was bought by the Sciames in 2004 a decade after Hepburn’s death has recently been renovated and is now more breathtaking than before.
A Beachfront Mansion for the Queen of Hollywood
Sitting on 1.47 acres of land, with 680 feet of beachfront, the traditional beach home is certainly no cottage by the beach. It is a gorgeous mansion featuring 8 bathrooms and 6 bedrooms on its 8,368 square feet of floor space. The 7 fireplaces, all restored to the original pine-paneled design, gives the home that warm and inviting feel which is a rare feat to accomplish in very large houses. Each room has scenic ocean views which can be enjoyed via the large windows with elegant detailed features.
Katherine Hepburn loved the summer home so much that it stayed with her until she passed away. The home has its own dock and beach. It also comes with a land trust which Hepburn designed to protect the natural habitat and provide privacy.
Katherine Hepburn has a long history with the home. She did some major building and renovations on the estate after the original structure was destroyed in a 1938 natural disaster. She certainly made the home her own, fit for a Hollywood Queen with 4 Academy awards and 12 nominations – more than anyone in Hollywood’s history.
During The Great New England Hurricane, Hepburn recounts that she lost about 95% of her personal belongings, including an Oscar trophy for Best Actress which she won in 1932. The statuette was later found intact much to Hepburn’s joy. She then proceeded to rebuild and renovate the home to be safer from future unleashing of nature’s power in under a year. The great actress truly cherished the property and lived in it until her passing in 2003 at the ripe age of 96.
Upon Hepburn’s passing, the home was acquired by Frank Sciame, a renowned builder from New York who has successfully restored notable buildings such as the Guggenheim Museum, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Pierpont Morgan Museum and Library. When Sciame restored Hepburn’s estate, he did not only do a complete restoration, he also updated the home by bringing in modern conveniences such as equipping it with a fully modern kitchen.
The home’s kitchen features an AGA stove, a SubZero refrigerator, a huge sink, and a large marble countertop – all perfect features for entertaining. As for aesthetics, the kitchen has beautiful beadboard cabinets which spans the entire space. Walking unto the dining area brings you to the lawn and the porch, again suitable features for large gatherings of family and friends. In fact, you can even go ahead and land a seaplane in front of the home or use the dock to go to The Hamptons - home and playground to the rich and famous, which is only about an hour away.
