Oakville had the Mercedez Benz Oakville 10K late last month and although it was a held on a chilly spring day, a record crowd of runners and other participants showed up for the fun event – a true testament as to how well executed and organised the event is.

What A Course!

The event, which was hosted at the Appleby College campus, is one of the best running events for anyone in or around Oakville. The course was laid out in such a nice manner and designed to prompt the runner to keep going forward. There were motivational signages everywhere, encouraging runners to keep pushing through and there were also lots of drinking stations as well. The course for the MB Oakville 10K is fairly flat and fast. It barely had any hills except in the initial third of the course where it passes through and loops under the Lakeshore Rd bridge by the 16th Mile Creekm making it a real fun run from beginning to end!

The run begins and ends at Appleby college and then heads out from Lakeshore to Rebecca St. and then east going along Rebecca. At 16 Mile Creek, it loops back in such a way that you’ll end up in Forsythe St. which is to the right of the bridge going to Oakville Harbour. From that point, it is only a little way off and downhill on Water St. along the 16 Mile Creek and going back uphill again on Navy St. Afterwards this, the course moves southwards going to the lake and the tree-lined residential area at the south of the Town. The last 4 kilometres or so is going straight back along Lakeshore and slicing through Downtown Oakville and then finally back to Appleby College where the finish line awaits. Whew! What a course!

Outstanding Run For A Cause

The run raised money for the The Lighthouse Charity. For those of you who may not be familiar with it, The Lighthouse Charity is a charity group which provides peer support for grieving children and youth plus their families in the Peel and Halton area. The Lighthouse serves as a forum for companionship and bridge for individuals who have experienced major changes after someone passed on, a term often referred to as a “life-altering-death”. In this scenario, learning to cope with the loss of a loved one like a brother, mother, sister, or father is key. In The Lighthouse, it is recognised and respected that healing takes space, understanding and time. Now, isn’t this a great charity to run for?

Great Turnout

The 2015 Mercedez Benz Oakville raised a total of $132,000 for Oakville’s The Lighthouse Charity. Isn’t that awesome? Especially that this is only the 7th year that the event was held. Plenty of participants remarked that this year’s event had more people joining in the run. More so, everything was done so smoothly that it was almost like everything was rehearsed (in a good way!).

The Mercedez Benz Oakville 10K is truly more than just a community event, it is a community undertaking which helps to further bring the community closer together. The event was not just for adults, as children had their own versions of the run. We start teaching the community values to the kids while they’re young! That’s how we do it Oakville!
