With over $80 million in deposits taken from potential wealthy space cadets grabbing at the chance to hit suborbital, the final frontier is finally within reach - if you’ve got the scratch to pay for it!

U.K. billionaire and entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson says that his Virgin Galactic will be ready to take people up into the edges of space by the end of this year. He also said that this venture isn’t just about going into space, it’s about fast and easier international flights too.

A New Space Age

In the 20th century people spent money on cars, antiques, things that they could hold, touch, show off.

In the 21st century, people are spending money on experiences; and with a $250,000 price tag per flight, you’d be hard pressed to find a more exclusive, more costly than flying into space.

Speaking in Dubai during the UAE Government Summit, Branson said that the venture would become profitable within three years of its first flight - not a bad return for something that’s taken about a decade of intense research to come to fruition.

From Toronto to New Delhi in Two Hours

If you’ve ever flown on an international flight, even first class, you already know it’s just not fun.

“We built Virgin Galactic’s spaceships shaped like aeroplanes, and we want to make them bigger and bigger and faster in years to come,” he said. “If we can fly to Australia in a couple of hours that would give use a massive advantage.”

Imagine being able to travel from one side of the globe to the next, all at near-orbital speeds that would allow you to go from Toronto to New Delhi in just a couple of hours. No more jet lag, no more paying for overpriced sandwiches and inflight movies… how much would that be worth to you?

All Hinges on Approval

Virgin Galactic is waiting on its commercial license and certification from the USFAA (Federal Aviation Administration), which Branson states will go through sometime in the next six months.

Beyond that, they’ve been able to achieve Mach 4 and Branson plans to take his family up on one of the first flights into suborbital - and if you’re willing to take your family up in your crazy spaceship, it’s probably safe for the rest of us too.

Would you go up into space? How much would you pay, and are you willing to wait two years for your chance to get onboard?
