The new Former Hospital Site Project is about turning the old Oakville hospital site into potential housing and new community centre park for Oakville residents. The project is a joint venture between the town and the town’s community partners.

Besides housing and a new community centre park, a new community health club was also suggested by the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network. Residents and stakeholders will have a say on what will become of the former hospital.

Fall 2016 Update

A number of in-depth analyses of the land and buildings have been completed since April. To date, the town has:

  • Done a public consultation regarding the area’s on-street parking restrictions.
  • Completed an assessment of any potential site contamination as well as checked the buildings for hazardous materials.
  • Made a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding between the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network and the town about the possibility of a new community health hub.
  • Done structural assessments of designated heritage resource Oakville Trafalgar High School and the parking garage.

Upcoming Tree Relocation This Fall

8 trees within the former hospital’s fenced area will be removed and replanted in other areas of the town by the staff from the town’s Parks and Open Space department in an effort to save the town’s tree canopy. This will be done to save the trees from the demolition scheduled in 2017. New trees will be planted when the new construction has been done and the landscaping rocks that will not be used will be taken to another site for reuse.

What’s Next?

The whole project is actually divided into 3 phases and will soon be at the last and 3rd phase which will cover 2017 to 2020. This phase of reinvention will cover the demolition of the hospital building, the completion of a community needs assessment, the determination of the right location for the new centre and park, plus coming up with a development plan for the potential housing project for any remaining lands. The demolition part is expected to take 8 to 12 months and then the development of a new community centre will take about 3 years. The scheduled opening for this is September 2020.

More Information

The 3 phases of the project are:

Phase 1: Securing the Site – December 2015-April 2016

Phase 2: Understanding the Site – 2016-2017

Phase 3: Reinventing the Site – 2017-2020

A timeline for the entire project can be seen at the Former Hospital Site Project Timeline page.

An open house and consultation is scheduled on December 1, 2016 at Town Hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. where residents are invited to find out more about what is being done and what the next steps will be.

Public consultation sessions at the Town Hall are also scheduled at 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. where members of the public can provide input about the proposed new community centre for the site. As part of the town’s Parks, Recreation and Library Facilities Master Plan, the new community centre is proposed to have a gymnasium, an indoor swimming pool (that will replace the Centennial pool), an active living space, a multi-purpose space, a youth space, and community rooms.

The public consultation will focus on the confirmation of these amenities before the design is started in 2017. More information can be seen at the official town webpage.
