When you're renovating to sell or just improve your Oakville real estate, think about donating some of your stuff to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore! Doors, kitchen cabinets, and fixtures - virtually anything that can be cleaned up and reused in another home is going to be the things that you can donate - but you'll also be able to give old appliances, mouldings, windows and more. Why waste it when you can give it to a good cause (and one that may be tax deductible)?

How Much Waste Will You Have with Your Next Project?

When we renovate we’ll inevitably have a little waste, and what are you going to do with those old kitchen and bathroom cabinets? You could pay to have them taken to the landfill, or you could be smart. You can donate them to the ReStore and keep your Oakville real estate (and Oakville in general) a greener and more sustainable community! In 2010 Habitat for Humanity saved Canada about 1500 metric tonnes from going back into the landfill.

Proceeds Benefit the Community

Even though some of the materials aren't being used in homes built by Habitat for Humanity, all materials sold will benefit the community the store is located in. If you want your contribution to benefit the people around, it's a great choice. You'll be able to make renovating your Oakville real estate a little greener and make someone else's day a little brighter.

What Kinds of Building Materials can be Donated?

Here's a quick list of things that can be donated (you can find a more definitive list on the Habitat Toronto’s site here.

Lumber, Plywood, Scrap Wood

Electrical Materials (Wiring, Meters, etc.)

Plumbing Materials (Piping, Toilets, Tubs, Shower Heads, Sinks, Fixtures)

Windows, Doors, Cabinet Doors, Cupboards, Drawers, etc.

Roofing (New Insulation, Shingles, Tiles, etc.)

Flooring (Concrete, Tiles, Hardwood, Vinyl, Linoleum, etc.)

You can buy all these materials and then some at a good discount with zero HST. But by donating your materials you’ll really help out the community. They’ll even send out a salvage team that can come pick up your excess materials and no extra cost (we’ve all ended up with that extra half box of tiles!) It’s estimated that Canadians produce millions of tonnes each year of waste just from building homes. If you want your next renovation to be greener, think about recycling your excess with the ReStore. Why let it end up in a landfill when it doesn’t have to?
