It’s not uncommon that a couple can’t come to an agreement on where they’re going to move next – one of you wants to move to Oakville (excellent choice!), while the other wants to live right in the middle of Toronto or closer to work. What can you do? Short of just living separate lives in different homes, you’re going to have to come to an agreement. Even if you want to live in the same city but can’t decide on what Oakville luxury homes for sale you want to buy (or even bid on), you’re going to need to sit down and make a list.
Agree to Disagree
Sometimes you just have to agree to disagree before you can start working towards a common goal – while you both know that you want the same things (good school district, close to commute), some of the other stuff (like a home theater) can overwhelm what you’re trying to do here. Buying a home, even if it’s your second home or a vacation cottage, can be a big investment. No one wants to make the wrong decision, but it’s important that you sit down and talk about it.
What Are Your Priorities?
When you and your partner reach an impasse, it’s time to sit down. Each of you should make a “Top 10 List”; 5 things you absolutely have to have, 5 things you would like to have. Think of things like location you’d like to live in, the size of the house, condition (new, built after the war, built in the 70s) of the house, how long you and your partner will want to live there.
Will this be your forever home? Will this be the house you raise the kids in and then move onto something else later? What are your plans for this next home you plan to buy, where do your real priorities lie? Once you have your lists compiled, you can start comparing and talk about what you both really want, and what you both really need.
Do You Really Need That?
Maybe the two of you can come to terms with the fact that you don’t need (or really want) a 2 bedroom or a 10 bedroom house. Maybe a bay window in the front isn’t that important. Find points of convergence where your needs meet, and then start going to open houses to find the Oakville homes for sale that fall in line with what you both want.
